Discussion:
[Opera-linux] alienated bookmarks

I always display bookmarks on the bookmark bar to the left. When I
upgraded to Opera 5.0 for Linux I hoped that bookmarks would
automatically display there whenever Opera started up.

I'm now running Opera 5.0 for Linux 20010510 build 024 under RedHat
7.0 with Gnome 1.3. The problem remains, but worse, when I ask Opera
to show bookmarks on the bookmark bar, I get a cryptic alert.

It seems to say that the bookmark folder belongs to root, and the
current version of Opera won't allow me to display it on the bookmark
bar. Nevertheless, when I say "yes," it displays there. So it sounds
like the problem is displaying the bookmarks automatically on start up
remains.

What should I do to fix?

mmm, I assue you do not refer to the user "root" above but just the root
folder (toplevel folder is a better name for it)

The problem is that the root folder node itself (Named "Bookmarks") is not
stored in the bookmark file. The folder that is located on the bookmark bar is
tagged in the bookmark file but that is not possible for the root folder with
the current bookmark file format. I will try to make solution to eliminate this
problem.

In order to have a bookmark bar folder that is restored on startup then just
make a subfolder within the "Bookmark" folder and specify the subfolder as
the bookmark bar folder. The subfolder is saved in the bookmark file and is
therefore tagged.

The position of the bookmark bar itself is restored as well. Just move it to
the left edge.

Espen,

Sorry to be slow about this, but can't find any top level folder named
"Bookmark." I presume it should be ~/ or in ~/.opera, but it is
not. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place.

It should be "Bookmarks" (not "Bookmark") This folder is visible in the hotlist
window and only there. The contents of the ".opera/opera.adr" file is parsed
and displayed within this folder. The contents is shown in the "Bookmarks"
menu on the main menubar as well

Espen,

Yes, I understand that the contents of .opera/opera.adr is displayed
in the Bookmarks folder, but my problem is that it does not happen
automatically when I start Opera, and when I tell Opera to display the
contents of that file in the Bookmarks folder, I get a cryptic alert.

"The new bookmark folder is the root bookmark folder"

In what sense is the folder "new?" You seem to say that "Bookmarks" is
not actually a folder on my hard disk (which is why I can't find it
there), but rather the text field to the left of the Opera window. On
the other hand, to say that it is the "top level folder" suggests
otherwise. Adding to the confusion, Opera Help calls it a "Hotlist
panel."

"The version of Opera you use can not store information about this
folder in the bookmark file."

I assume the "bookmark file" is .opera/opera.adr. Why should this
file of URLs have to hold information about where it will be
displayed? Why can't Opera be configured to display the contents of
that file in the "bookmarks folder" automatically? If this version
can't do it, could older versions? My impression instead was that it
couldn't be done in older versions, but can be done now.

"The folder will not be restored on the bookmark bar the next time
you start Opera."

Not sure what it means to restsore a folder on the bookmark bar. What
is the "bookmark bar?" I can't find the term "bookmark bar" in Opera
Help. Besides, is not the aim to display something in the Bookmarks
folder, not display the Bookmarks folder in something else?

"Do you still want to use this folder?"

Is the question asking whether I want to use the Bookmarks folder to
display ./opera/opera.adr even though bookmarks will not automatically
be displayed there next time I start Opera?
